Fans attending the sold-out State of Origin Game II at Optus Stadium tomorrow night can enjoy a taste of Queensland and New South Wales when celebrity chefs Shane Delia and Matt Moran go head-to-head in a special culinary challenge.

Stadium culinary ambassadors Shane and Matt are visiting Perth for State of Origin and the Fremantle v Essendon game the following night.

Both have created a retail food special which will be available in a number of outlets across the venue:

  • True-Blue Smash Burger by Matt Moran - Smashed beef patty topped with cheese, beetroot, lettuce, tomato, pickles, red onion, and house burger sauce.
  • Mighty Maroons Kebab by Shane Delia - Roast chicken, with pickled onions, lettuce, garlic mayo and burnt pineapple jam

Optus Stadium CEO Mike McKenna said State of Origin was one of the greatest fixtures on the Australian sporting calendar and the venue was pulling out all stops to make it a memorable experience for fans.

“We like to have fun and do things differently with our retail food offerings which is why we’ve asked Shane and Matt to put a special Origin twist on some of our fan favourites,” Mr McKenna said.

Matt has watched plenty of Origins over the years but said being in the stadium, especially in a city like Perth, would take it to another level.

“There’s something about the energy, the crowd… it’s as good as it gets.,” Matt said.

“I’m Blues through and through, so I’ll be cheering them on hard.

“You can’t go past a good burger when you’re watching footy – one that is packed with flavour and has all the classics. A good beef patty, with cheese, beetroot, lettuce, tomato, pickles, red onion, and house burger sauce – it doesn’t get much better than that!”

Shane (from Melbourne) is a newly adopted Queenslander having recently opened his first Queensland restaurant, Layla.

“There's truly nothing like the electrifying atmosphere of State of Origin,” Shane said.

“The pinnacle of sports rivalries – Maroons versus Blues – as a newly adopted Queenslander, I'll be proudly wearing my Maroons jersey tonight!

“To bring a little taste of Queensland to Perth, I've got the tastiest kebab lined up: roast chicken, crisp lettuce, tangy pickled onions, creamy garlic mayo, and, for that essential Queensland twist, a touch of delicious smoky burnt pineapple jam.”

Both items are priced at $15 and will be available from selected outlets across the stadium for Origin and at the Fremantle game.

Shane recently launched two hugely popular Biggie Smalls outlets, his kebab brand with a twist, named after late rap legend The Notorious B.I.G. They are located at the stadium on Levels 1 and 5.

The Chefs will also be going head-to-head in the stadium’s premium hospitality spaces with some of Shane’s Middle Eastern influenced creations on offer alongside Matt’s paddock to plate inspired dishes.
