New WA made pie crafted specially for local footy fans to launch at 60th Western Derby
A new, limited edition, Western Australian-made pie will be launched at Optus Stadium this weekend at the 60th Western Derby between the West Coast Eagles and Fremantle Dockers.
The Slow Cooked Beef and Beer Pie is a collaboration between two of the Stadium’s longstanding partners - Alby and Mrs Mac’s.
Optus Stadium Head of Retail Food & Beverage Gemma Hansen said her team’s goal was to explore every possible avenue to elevate the fan experience.
“We’re fortunate to be part of a stadium where our fans are deeply engaged and eager to discover what’s new and what’s next,” Ms Hansen said.
“Bringing together two loved WA brands and launching an exciting new local product at one of the State’s biggest sporting events makes perfect sense.”
Head Brewer Ross Brown said the Alby team was stoked to come together with Mrs Mac’s to create the ultimate footy feed.
“While brewing beer is the world’s greatest gig, creating a pie might give it a run for its money,” Mr Brown said.
“The pie was a true collaboration between brewers, pie makers and a few very lucky taste testers. It’s rich and tasty, with that award-winning Alby flavour tying it all together.
“There’s no better combo than a beer and pie, so we know bringing them together is a kick through the big sticks.
The pie is crafted using Mrs Mac’s signature golden, flaky pastry. The WA-sourced premium beef cheek is slow cooked in beer-infused sauce to create the perfect pairing for sports fans and food lovers alike.
Mrs Mac’s has been serving its range of pies and sausages rolls to Optus Stadium fans since opening, with more than 3 million units consumed in that period. Mrs Mac’s recently was re-awarded the exclusive rights to supply its products at Optus Stadium for a further three years after a competitive tender.
Bruce Feodoroff, CEO of Aus Pie Co, the owner of Mrs Mac’s brand, said they were committed to enhancing the fan experience at Optus Stadium with innovative products like the new pie.
“We’re really proud of the partnership we have with the stadium and are delighted to have once again won the tender to exclusively supply our products at Perth’s premier entertainment destination,” Mr Feodoroff said.
“Mrs Mac’s has been a Western Australian institution for over 70 years, known for crafting delicious, hearty pies, sausage rolls and pasties made with premium, locally sourced ingredients and a passion for flavour.
“We use flour from the Wheatbelt region of WA and locally grown vegetables wherever possible.”
Mr Feodoroff said the beer pie was just one example of Mrs Mac’s culinary innovation, showcasing their ability to blend traditional recipes with modern flavours that resonate with today's consumers.
“We regularly introduce limited-edition pies, allowing us to experiment with seasonal ingredients and a wider range of local flavours, keeping the excitement alive for our customers.”
Mr Brown said launching the Alby and Mrs Macs collaboration pie was also the perfect way to show West Aussies Alby’s upsized can and fresh new look.
“While your lips will find the same gold-medal winning beer, Alby has scaled up to a 375ml can, with a great new design that’s never looked better in the fridge.”
The new pie is $8.50 and will be available in all stadium outlets that sell Mrs Mac’s pies as well as the Alby Bar and Gage Roads Bars on Level 1 throughout the AFL season.
